Jacob shook his head as he listened to Daniel explain what had happened to Jack and Sam. Leave it to his kid to think she could do the impossible. But, after all they had asked of her in the past, he supposed they were somewhat to blame for making her think that she could always pull off the impossible.
"I get the feeling that you didn't just ask me to come so that you could tell me this in person," Jacob said when a lull in the conversation appeared.
"No," Daniel said. "We were wondering if you could contact them."
"With their Stargate inoperative, how will I do that?" he wanted to keep his tone civil and he could feel Selmack admonishing him, but he couldn't. He knew it wasn't Daniel's fault Sam was trapped on a planet thousands of light years from home, but that wasn't helping his mood at the moment.
"We saw the Tollan use a device to contact the Nox and Sam said they'd shared it with the Tok'ra." Carter sighed and shook his head sadly.
"It requires 2 devices, Daniel. One to transmit and one to receive." Jacob watched as Daniel's face fell, what little hope he was clinging had just been dashed. "I'm sorry Daniel," he said softly.
"Yeah," the archeologist replied. "Me too."

Jack stood by the lake, trying to skip rocks across it and willing his brain to turn off. He and Carter had had a fight this morning, something that was starting to happen more and more as he began to settle in while she maintained hope that they'd find the gate soon.
"Where is your friend?" Laira asked as she carefully picked her way down the worn path towards Jack.
"No idea," he said gruffly as he launched another rock towards the water. The rock sank with a splash, not even skipping once. His concentration was definitely off. Laira frowned a little.
"Perhaps she is digging for the ring?"
"Maybe." She came to a stop at his side, hoping he'd share more with her but he remained tight lipped on the subject of Samantha Carter.
"Have you given up?" she asked after a long moment. Jack hesitated with the rock he was about to throw. She waited patiently for his answer, staring out across the lake, watching the light wind gently bend the reeds along the shore.
"Maybe," he finally replied, launching his rock in the water as hard as he could.
"Would it be so horrible to live out the rest of your days on our world?" she asked quietly, bending down to collect some rocks of her own.
"Why are you here?" he said quickly, changing the subject. Whether or not he wanted to live out the rest of his life on this planet was not something he wanted to get into. Laira shrugged, confessing that she hadn't intentionally sought him out, that she had simply been out walking and happened upon him. The fact that Carter wasn't at his side was what had made her come over. Silence fell over the pair again for a long moment before jack shoved his hands in his pockets and headed back towards the village.
Laira could do nothing but sigh as she watched him go. There were many things she wanted to say to Jack O'Neill, but until she figured out what exactly the relationship between him and Samantha was, she would keep her distance.

Carter heaved another sizable rock out of her way as she continued to dig for the gate. She had no idea where O'Neill was, he was stormed off a while ago when she had refused to take the day off from digging. As she turned to retrieve her shovel, she tripped over another large rock in the pit. She cursed, loudly, as she toppled forward, her hands shooting out to watch herself.
"Oh fuck!" she said loudly and she pushed herself up off the ground and saw the damage she had done to her right hand. She had managed to land on a particularly jagged rock that had put a sizable cut in her hand. She quickly grabbed the water jug she'd brought with her, pulled the cork out with her teeth and carefully balanced the large jug on her knees so she could wash out the wound. She hissed as the water flushed the wound and heaved a sigh when she caught sight of a piece of gravel, stuck in the wound. There was no way she'd be able to hold it open and remove the stone on her own.
"Whatcha doin' in the dirt, Carter?" she heard from above. She turned to see Jack standing at the edge of the pit, hands in his pockets.
"Cut my hand, sir," she said, making no moves to get up from where she was sitting. With a sigh, he sat on the edge of the pit and slid down to her.
"Lemme see," he said, holding out his hand for hers. With a sigh and a somewhat dark look, Carter held out her hand.
"There's a rock stuck in the wound," she told him. He nodded as he looked for himself before he stood to grab the field pack they always brought with them to the pit. He returned to her side and silently began to dig for the first aid kit.
"Hold still," he muttered after he had found the tweezers and some gauze. She winced as he pulled the skin further apart until he could see the rock. "There," he said after a long moment. "Wanna keep it?" he asked, dropping it into some gauze.
"What for?" she asked as she pressed another wad of gauze into the wound. He shrugged, suggesting it could now be a good luck charm. She simply sent him a look as he found a field bandage to wrap around the wound. "What's wrong?"
"I think I'm ready to slow down," he said after a long moment.
"To slow down?" she asked. In her gut, she was pretty sure she knew what he was going to say, but she had to hear him say it.
"To slow down looking for the gate." He heard her suck in a breath and he wasn't sure if it was from him bandaging her hand or from what he had just told her.
"Oh," was all she eventually got out.
"I didn't say I was ready to stop, just ready to not spend every spare moment playing in the dirt," he clarified for her. Sam nodded a little as he finished with dressing her hand, her mouth set in a tight line. She hated giving up on half finished tasks. She had been trying to prepare herself for this possibility for some time now, but she still wasn't ready for it.
"Are we done here?" she finally asked. He let go of her hand and didn't have time to answer before Carter was on her feet and headed out of the pit, stalking back towards the village.
"Yeah," he said with a sigh as he slowly began to gather their things. "We're done here.
