Sam and Jack both spent a long, restless night camped out on the hard floor of Laira's house. Both of them pretending to be asleep for the others benefit.
"Sir?" Carter finally said, shattering the silence they had both been hiding in.
"What is it Major?" he asked, still facing away from her.
"Never mind," she said. She wasn't exactly sure why she had even said anything to begin with. Silence, broken only by the shuffling of two officers trying to get comfortable, fell heavy over them again.
"Carter?" O'Neill finally said.
"Yes sir?"
"I'm glad you're here," he said. "I'd hate to think what it'd be like to be stuck here alone."
"Me too, sir," was all she could think of to say in reply to that. Was he simply glad she was there so he wasn't alone, or was he glad she was there because he enjoyed her company? Carter rolled over once again and found herself staring a hole into the back of her commanding officers head. Part of her wished he'd just explode rage all over her for disobeying his orders and getting herself stuck here along with him while another part was glad that he was making an effort to keep thing civil between them. With another sigh and a shake of her head, Carter rolled over one last time and tried to fall sleep. She had a feeling that they were going to be put to work tomorrow whether they wanted to help or not.

"Major Carter!" Sam turned to see who was calling out to her. She offered a small smile whens he saw Laira headed in her direction with a jug of what Sam was sure was water. She leaned her hoe against the fence post and took a moment to remove her hat and wipe the sweat form her forehead before brushing her hair back and holding it in place with her cap once again.
"Thanks," she said, taking the jug from Laira and enjoying the cool water. She leaned against the fence, allowing herself a short break as she drank again.
"What is it?" Carter didn't answer right away as she watched the men continue to toil in the fields. There had to be a way to make the harvesting more efficient.
"Nothing," she said after a long moment. Sam took one more mouthful before she handed the jug back to Laira and picked up the hoe again, returning to her task of clearing the rocks and debris that had been thrown onto the fields so that the others could move smoothly through the rows with their large scythes. She and O'Neill worked with the villagers for the rest of the day and Sam had to admit that there was something oddly satisfying about a day of hard physical labour that she just couldn't get from a day spent hunched over some kind of alien device in her lab.
"How ya doin' Carter?" O'Neill asked as they trudged back towards the village.
"Not that bad, actually," she said, shoving her dirty hands into her equally dirty pants.
"Feel up to some more digging?" he asked. She didn't hesitate before nodding.
"Just let me grab a water jug," she told him. He nodded as she sprinted off towards the well as he headed towards the shed that held the heavier mining tools. He grabbed a pick axe and a couple of shovels and was ready to go just as she arrived at his side again. The walk to the gate was silent, O'Neill because he didn't really have anything to say and Carter because she was busy trying to calculate where the gate may be in the crater.
"Any suggestions?" he asked when they got to the heart of the crater.
"Give me a minute," she said. She looked around them for a moment before wandering a few steps away from O'Neill and clearing a spot in the sand. He wandered over and crouched beside her, watching as she carefully began to write some rather complex looking equations in the sand. A smile quirked his lips as she furrowed her brow and rubbed out part of her equation before re working it. "Here," she said, standing up and walking a few feet away, marking out a rather large area for them to start digging in. "Best guess says it we're going to find any trace of the gate, it will be somewhere in this area." With a nod, Jack grabbed the pick axe and handed one of the shovels to Carter. With a shared look, the pair began digging.

"Mother held back some dinner for you two," Garan said as he entered the crater and caught side of the two outsiders. They both paused in their work, but only Carter turned to squint in his direction.
"There's still a few hours of daylight left," O'Neill said, shooting a quick glance at Carter to see if she could keep digging.
"Thank your mother," she said. "We'll be done in a bit." Garan took in the two outsiders for another moment before nodding and heading home again. They were a strange pair, as far as he was concerned. Why they didn't just accept their new lives on Edora was beyond him. They could have a fine life here, land, food, families and a life time of happiness but instead they were working in the fields all day before spending even more time digging for the stone ring that probably didn't exist any more.
"How close to the surface do you think the gate is?" O'Neill asked when they finally packed in their digging for the night. Twilight was starting to fall and they'd be lucky if they made it back to the village before it was completely dark out. Carter sighed a little as she considered her answer.
"I don't know," she said. "The gate may have simply been knocked over and buried in a small layer of debris or it may have been thrown from it's base and buried under a few feet of dirt. Worst case scenario is that it's been destroyed and we're doing this for nothing." Jack let this sink in for a moment.
"What about getting us by ship?"
"We are several thousand light years from Earth, sir. Even if they could find a ship, I would imagine that it was take at least a year, maybe longer for them to reach us. And that's if they can get a ship from the Tollans or the Tok'ra." Jack let this sink in as they walked back to Laira's house.
"Maybe we should think about moving into one of the smaller houses in the village," he said absently.
"If you like, sir," she said. A straw thatch would be better than the stone floor they were sleeping on right now.
"I'll start asking around tomorrow then," he said as they entered the village and headed to Laira's house. She met them both at the door before directing them to the back of the house, giving them both instructions to wash up and take advantage of the clean clothing she'd laid out for them. Carter thanked her as O'Neill turned his attention to the clothing that had been laid out for them. As Laira returned to the house Carter turned her attention to the clothing as well. She drew in a sharp breath as she saw the earthy coloured items that all the villagers wore. "You can go first," he said abruptly as he turned on his heel and left the area.
"Sir!" she called out after him, but he didn't stop. She had no idea where he was going and considered going after him for a moment, but decided against it. She fingered the clothing one last time before she began stripping out of her filthy, sweaty clothes and cleaning up as best she could.
