"I thought you were supposed to be working with Samantha today." Paynan looked up to see Nyal walking slowly towards him.
"I was," he said as he balanced a log on his chopping block before swinging his axe down, splitting into firewood.
"And yet you're out here splitting wood," Nyal came to a stop a few feet away, waiting for Paynan to finish before he came closer. With a final swing, Paynan swung the axe into the chopping block before reaching for the water jug at his side.
"That friend of hers showed up early this morning, telling me that she couldn't make it, something about a personal day, whatever that is."
"They're outsiders from a world far more advanced than ours. Perhaps they don't understand what hard work is." Paynan considered this for a moment as he settled himself on the edge of the chopping block. "You doubt that?"
"How many days did they both spend all day in the field before searching for the ring until last light? They understand hard work, but I wonder if they only work hard when it will benefit themselves."
"Everything we do here benefits us all," Nyan said calmly.
"Well, perhaps this 'personal day' they're taking will benefit us all in the end." Nyan looked at his old friend with a critical eye.
"You've had nothing but distrust and anger towards O'Neill and now you're putting blind trust in him?"
"I trust Samantha Carter," he said firmly. "She's smart, capable and can handle herself."
"She's also very easy on the eyes." Both men shared a knowing look and chuckle before Paynan rose and grasped his axe once again.

"So, do ya still hate me?" O'Neill asked casually, his feet dangling in the cool water of the lake.
"I never hated you," Carter said calmly as she pulled her line from the water, frowning at the missing worm. These fish were craftier than earth fish.
"Fine, are you still mad at me?"
"I was never mad at you," she replied casually as she fished another worm out of the container before holding the rod tightly between her knees while grasping the hook and threading the worm on. He smiled at the face she made as some of the worms innards ended up on her fingers. Carter could be such a girl some times.
"Then what was last night all about?" he asked, shifting his attention from the water to her.
"Last night was. . . " she trailed off, trying to figure out what to say. "I don't know," she finally decided. "A tantrum maybe." He blinked at her for a long moment.
"You don't look 3."
"It's just. . . I feel rather useless, and restless," she complained.
"I wouldn't call you useless. Form what I hear, you're in high demand in the village." Carter shrugged.
"Nothing I'm fixing is a challenge, except for the fact that all the pieces have to be hand made. There's nothing more complex than gears and belts in their technology." He stayed quiet and watched as she cast her line back into the lake and waited. "I'm bored," she finally said.
"And throwing yourself into digging was satisfying?"
"It was something," she said with a shrug. "A challenge."
"Digging was a challenge? I think you've been spending too much time in the sun." She couldn't help but chuckle a little at that.
"The math is a challenge," she clarified. "The digging is mindless, but it gives me the chance to run equations in my head. How fast was the meteor going, it's trajectory, where it actually did land, if it hit the stargate or simply knocked it over."
"You really are an geek, ya know that?"
"Yes sir," she said with a smile.
"So, time to get down to business," Jack said, abruptly changing the subject. He wedged his fishing pole between some rocks and turned his full attention to Carter. She didn't turn towards him and he decided not to force the issue. "Do you want to start with the gate, or somewhere to live?"
"You know that little house at the edge of the village?"
"The one with the broken windows?"
"Yeah," she said, chancing a glance over at him. "Laira says it's ours if we want it." Jack considered it for a moment before telling her that he wanted it if she did and not just because he was tired of sleeping on someones floor. "Ok," she agreed. He watched as she pulled into herself a little more, but he stayed quiet.
They were taking the house, taking the first steps in creating a life on Edora and all she could think was that they were giving up.
