An Arresting Development.
Mystery novelist Richard Castle's 'family friend' has been scarce since we caught her, Castle and his two young children leaving The MET a little more than 6 weeks ago, but she hasn't disappeared completely. In fact, Detective Katherine Beckett (Yes, one of the NYPD's finest) was seen in a local cafe with the novelist and his kids Friday afternoon as the trio enjoyed a quick bite together.

Anonymous reports also say that the pair were caught making several discreet PDA's while the young Castle's looked on.

Always the gentleman, Castle made sure to escort his lady detective back to work once all was said and done.

"Damnit," Kate muttered under her breath when she saw the pictures of her, Rick, Alexis and Charlie on Page Six. Rick had popped into the precinct last week, with Charlie and Alexis, to take her to lunch, only he hadn't warned her and while she had been distracted with both kids demanding her attention, Esposito and Ryan had stepped in and pulled him away. While she didn't know for sure what they had said to him, she had a pretty good idea given the look on his face.

They thought they had picked a quiet little cafe that would attract no attention, but apparently they were wrong.

"What?" Rick asked as he came up beside her, depositing Charlie in her lap as he moved to the range and pulled down a pan before turning to survey the contents of the refrigerator. Kate wrapped her arm securely around Charlie's middle and dropped a kiss to the top of his head, enjoying the warm, heavy weight of the still sleepy toddler.

"They know me," she said as she laid the paper out flat on the counter and spun it around so Rick could see. He made a comment about the pictures being a good ones as he read the article. He promised to call Paula as soon as breakfast was over.

"Alexis, you wanna come help?" Rick called out. A little red head popped up from behind the couch and soon the rest of the girl followed, trotting into the kitchen and giggling as Rick swung her up onto the counter.

"Hi Kate," Alexis greeted as she turned slightly and leaned over, hugging Kate good morning. She hugged the girl back with her free arm and dropped a kiss on the top of her head too, before letting her go.

"Hi Alexis," Kate replied with a smile as she helped Charlie stand on her thighs and lean on the counter to watch what was going on. "Did you have a good sleep?" The girl nodded and offered her own smile before turning her attention back to her father, helping to pour the milk into the eggs he was scrambling. "Rick?"

"Yeah?" he looked up from the peppers he was dicing.

"Tell Paula to make it official." He looked her hard in the eye as he put the knife down on the counter.

"Does that mean you're finally daddy's girlfriend?" Alexis asked after having heard what Kate said.

"She's been my girlfriend for a long time," Rick supplied. "It's just not a secret any more," he said with a smile he couldn't keep off of his face.

"Seems like time," Kate said with a shrug as she reached across the counter and pulled a small pile of diced peppers closer. She, Charlie and Alexis all took a piece as Rick complained about them stealing his omelet fillings, the Page Six article and the newest step in their relationship soon forgotten.

"So, almost a year together," Rick pointed out as they slowly wandered through a park in the late afternoon having left the kids with Martha.

"Any thoughts?" she asked, looking up at him and squinting into the sun a little. He made the obligatory jokes about criminals changing their hours to 9-5 before growing quiet. "Anything else?" she asked.

"I like waking up to you in the morning," he informed her, making reference to the fact that she had started to spend the night a few weeks ago. She blushed and hid her face in his shoulder for a moment before assuring him that she liked it too. "The kids like it too," he told her softly. "If you don't get to him first, the only word I hear from Charlie is your name."

"And Alexis?"

"Has started complaining about my hair styling skills when you're not there," he grumbled and she couldn't help but laugh at him. How many men would admit to being put out that their daughters' no longer wanted them doing their hair? She sobered up after a few minutes.

"If we hadn't had that night, where would we be?" she asked, talking about the conversation they'd had about her mother.

"We would have had a conversation by now," he said, letting go of her hand so he could wrap an arm around her shoulder and pull her tight against his side. "And the conversation probably would have turned into an ultimatum," he confessed. "Either we sit down and have a talk or we break up."

"Who'd have thought that the paparazzi would rescue a relationship?" she asked quietly after a moment. Kate had known for a while that their relationship was going to hit a cross roads. In fact, she'd known that even before the first picture on Page Six had appeared, but she'd been ignoring what was going on. But then the picture had appeared, he'd asked for her trust and she'd asked for his trust and now they were making up for lost time. 6 weeks ago, their lives had been mostly separate, but now they were thoroughly mixed up. At least half of her clothes were in his closet and, more often than not, it was his bed she fell into when she finally escaped the precinct.

"Stranger things have happened," he quipped with a smile of his own as they kept wandering through the park.

Eventually, the pair had headed home where they were quickly greeted with smiles and hugs from everyone. Martha stayed long enough to have dinner before slipping off to meet up with her latest bow, leaving everyone else to clean up and settle in the study to watch a movie before the kids were tucked into bed and they retired themselves.

"Hey Rick?" Kate called out softly as she looked down at him. He had slid down under the covers a while ago while she had stayed upright, back against the headboard and her knees pulled up to her chest, arms wrapped around them.

"Yeah?" he replied as he rolled over to look at her. He smiled to himself as saw how the light from the street outside came through the window and lit her just right.

"I love your kids," she told him as she turned her head to look at him. He flashed her a smile before assuring her that his kids loved her. Kate turned back to the window, a smile on her face as a comfortable silence fell over them. "Rick?" she asked, drawing his attention once again.

"Kate?" he echoed as he rolled onto his back slightly, propping himself up on an elbow so he could see her better.

"I love you too," she told him, a ghost of a smile on her face as she turned her head and rested it on her knees. He raised himself up carefully before bringing his free hand up to the back of her head. He kissed her long and slow before finally pulling back.

"I love you too," he finally replied, kissing her again until he felt her boy uncurling and sliding under the covers with him.
