SummaryHarry and Hermione have a late night talk that leads them to re-examine a few things.
"So," she said as she found him later that night.
"So?" he asked as he looked up at her. She sat beside him, keeping a small distance.
"Maybe you're right," she said after a long moment. Harry smiled to himself, but didn't comment right away.
"About?" he asked when she finally turned to look at him.
"You know very well what." She had no desire to actually admit what he was right about. He laughed, not really knowing what else to do. "So, what now?" Hermione asked as she stared up at the stars that flickered over head.
"Uhhh . . ." he got out. He hadn't exactly planned on her agreeing with him so quickly. "We take it slow?"
"Asking or saying?"
"Saying," Harry decided. "I wanna make sure I get this right."
"Good plan. Gives us backing out time too."
"Are you planning to back out?" he asked her. Hermione hesitated. "Because this isn't going to work if you're already planning on ending it."
"When the hell did you become the logical one?" she asked with a frustrated sigh. He chuckled.
"I guess you rubbed off on me a little too well," he replied as he squidged closer to her, closing the gap and throwing an arm around her shoulder, pulling her closer to him. She sighed and went along with it, enjoying the closeness for a moment.
"This is really scary."
"Weren't all of our great adventures really scary?"
"Terrifying," she agreed with a smile. "So is that what you see this as? An adventure?"
"I don't think so, not completely anyways."
"Right then," she said and the two fell into a comfortable silence. They sat for ages in the gully, not saying a word as they watched the stars move across the sky and the lazy little fireflies buzz around them.
"I can only ever find the big dipper," Harry admitted some time later as he laid back on the ground with a yawn. She looked from him to the sky for a long moment.
"There's the little dipper," she said, laying back to point out constellations to him. The fact that she had chosen to lie partially on him wasn't lost on Harry and he took the opportunity to play with her hair a little, another yawn slipping out. He closed his eyes and let his mind drift as she prattled on about starts and planets and what not and realized that she was a very relaxing influence on him, not that he'd ever tell her that . . .
Hermione gave a yawn herself after a long while, realizing that she had either put him to sleep or he simply wasn't paying attention any more.
"We should head back to bed," she said quietly.
"Yep," he replied, eyes still closed, making no effort to move.
"You have an excuse, don't you?"
"We were both so hot and he ran into each other down stairs and decided that a bit of fresh air would do us good," he stopped because of a yawn. "And then we ended up falling asleep out side." Hermione chuckled and tucked herself a little tighter into his side.
"I like that."
"I like this." There was a long pause and Harry got a little worried.
"So do I," she said and he could hear the fatigue in her voice. He smiled to himself as he started to drift again, and he had a feeling things would be okay. His next task was going to be to convince Ron that it was going to be okay.
One more part after this, I think., Maybe two, just to tie up all the ends.
