Sam raced off in the direction that she had seen O'Neill and Laira head off in. Just as she raced around the corner of one of the buildings in the small village, she felt the wind change and grow hotter. She also got a sickening feeling in the pit of her stomach as she heard the very distinct sound of a large object breaching the atmosphere. She glanced over her shoulder in time to see a very large meteor headed towards the ground in the direction of the Stargate. Sam hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should head back but she decided against it. She hoped that SG-1's freakish good luck would hold out as she neared the caves that she knew Daniel had been exploring.
"Sir?" Carter called out as she ducked into the caves.
"Carter?" O'Neill called back. She crept further into the cave and met up with him a few steps later. "What the hell Carter?"
"We have to go now, Sir!" she said quickly, turning to head for the mouth of the cave again.
"There's no time," he said, grabbing her arm and stopping her from leaving. She turned to look at him before they both paused to look out the mouth of the cave at the meteors that were still pummeling the planet. "Why didn't you stay at the gate?" he asked her, trying to keep from ripping into her, knowing that Laira, her son and his friend were nervous enough. Carter hesitated as she tried to come up with a good answer. She knew she should have stayed at the gate with Teal'c.
"You weren't answering your radio," she finally said. "I left to find you, to tell you that everyone who was leaving was through the gate so you wouldn't linger in the village after you had found Laira and her son." The two soldiers spent a long moment looking at each other before he accepted her explanation and led her into the cave where the others were.
"We should be able to head home in a couple of days," O'Neill said as he and Sam took a seat with the others. "You're people should be able to come home about then too," he said to Laira. The woman nodded, offering him a small smile as she shifted to sit a little closer to her son as the small group waited out the Fire Rain.
