"Come on Carter," he called out to her a few minutes later as he caught up to her. She ignored him and kept walking, though she did slow her pace slightly. "Samantha!" he yelled at her as he broke into a light jog to close the distance. The use of her full name finally made her pause and turn to face him. "I'm sorry," he told her again.

"I thought we were done," she said angrily.

"I lied, sue me," he said, dropping the shovel and the pack to the ground. "We're not giving up," he told her.

"It certainly feels like we are," she told him, crossing her arms over her chest.

"You said it would take a year, minimum for a ship to reach us?"

"If they could find one not long after we got stuck here, yes."

"Well, I think it's safe to say that that ship has sailed." Jack was very aware of the pun he had just made. So was Carter, as evidenced by the smile that was trying to break out on her face. "Rescue is coming," he continued.

"That doesn't mean we should just sit back and wait for it to show up. For all we know, we're just a few feet from the gate, we could, in theory, be home tomorrow." He couldn't help but smile a little as she started gesturing, something she only did when she was excited about something.

"For all we know, the gate was obliterated and is now nothing but a solid mass of naquadah," he countered.

"Have you always been this cynical? I mean, I know you have your moments, but, really?"

"Realist, not cynic," he clarified. Sam couldn't do anything but shake her head at him in disbelief. "Do we need to map out a digging schedule?" he asked her. He was aware that he sounded more than a little patronizing, but he didn't really care.

"Don't patronize me, sir," she said calmly, sending him a look. He cleared his throat as he tried to come up with his next plan of action.

"Look Carter, I found this lake the other day," he told her. "Take tomorrow off. Tomorrow, you and me will head down to that lake and just hang around. Swim, fish, skip rocks, whatever."

"Tomorrow I'm supposed to go and look at Paynan's. . ."

"I don't care," he said, cutting her off. "Just come with me tomorrow and we'll work everything out; gate searching, housing arrangements, field duties, everything." Sam studied Jack for a long moment while he pleaded silently with her.

"Are there any fish in this lake?" she asked. She'd heard rumours that O'Neill fished in a fishless lake when he was at his cabin.

"As far as I know," he said with a shrug.

"Just tomorrow," she finally said, more than a little reluctantly.

"Excellent!" he said brightly, his face lighting up in a large smile as he picked up the pack and shovel. She tried to take the shovel from him and he turned her down. "You need to let that hand do some healing before tomorrow," he told her as they started walking again. "I don't think it's possible to bait a hook with one hand."
