"So, 24 hours before Hammond calls the President to let him know we're home," Sam said with a regretful sigh. Jack glanced over at her and wasn't surprised to see that her attention was focused out the window of the car he had borrowed from the base.
"We better make the best of the time then," he replied, turning his eyes back to the road.
"Would you really give it all up?"
"Why do you not believe that?" he asked her. She had asked him that same question in some way, shape or form at least a million times in the last couple of weeks.
"Because a random time in the future and right now are two completely different things," she pointed out.
"As much as I hate to say it, I am getting closer to 50 than 40, my knees are all but shot and going through the Stargate is a young man's game."
"You're not old," Sam automatically muttered and he couldn't help but smile.
"Well, I feel old at the end of the day."
"And that's enough to make you pack it in?" she asked as he pulled into his driveway. He was pleased to see that the house and the yard had been taken care of. He made a mental note to take Teal'c and Daniel out as thanks at some point.
"You are enough to make me pack it in. Why is this so hard for you to understand?" he asked as they both slipped out of the car and headed towards the house. He knew that she'd had her share of failed relationships, but he found it hard to believe that they had all convinced her that she wasn't worth sacrificing for.
"Because I know how much you love going through that gate," she told him as she waited for him to unlock the door before following him in. "I know how much you love exploring new planets, no matter how much you complain about the trees and the rocks and the random groups of Jaffa that are lying in wait for us."
"And I know you love all that just as much, possibly more, but you're willing to sacrifice it all too." They stared at each other for a long moment after entering the house. It smelled unnaturally clean to Jack, but he didn't dwell. Things would right themselves in a few days. "Let some one sacrifice for you for once," He told her, pulling her close. "Just this once, if it comes to that, ok?"
"Let me guess, that would make you happy?"
"Ecstatic," he told her dramatically and she couldn't help but smile and shake her head at him.
"Don't ever change, ok?" she asked him quietly. He agreed before he pulled her as close as he could and kissed her.

Hammond sat in his office after most of the base had gone home for the evening. If he had been the type of man to keep a bottle of scotch in his desk, he would definitely be indulging tonight.
He was going to loose Samantha Carter and Jack O'Neill to Robert Kinsey's political game and he was pretty sure there wasn't a damned thing he could do about it.
He knew things had changed between them on Edora, they stood a little closer to each other, looked more comfortable with each other and generally looked like people who knew each other intimately. He had been married for many years and had learned to notice the tell tale signs that gave a loving relationship away.
If he had his way, he'd ignore the fact that regulations had more than likely been broken and, as long as they kept it off base, he'd let them continue to serve together on SG1. But, he wasn't going to get his way this time. Kinsey was finally going to get his.
The man was going to destroy the finest team Hammond had ever seen just so that he could better serve his own political, and probably financial, goals.
Robert Kinsey was a horses ass as far as George Hammond was concerned and there was nothing he could do in the next 18 hours that would change that.
God he wished he kept a bottle of scotch in his desk.
