"Sir? Senator Kinsey is on line 1." Hammond sighed and glanced at the clock. O'Neill and Carter weren't due back on base for another 12 hours, yet somehow Kinsey already knew they were back.
"Thank you Walter," he said reluctantly. Hammond took another moment to steel himself before he picked up the phone and got an earful from the irate senator. He was demanding to know why he hadn't been informed immediately when the two Air Force officers had returned and what the hell was he thinking, letting them off base?
The General sat patiently, waiting for Kinsey to bluster himself out before he began explaining why he did what he had done. O'Neill and Carter had been declared MIA and would remain MIA until the paperwork was processed, something that would take another 12 hours and since the pair of them were technically civilians until such time as their ranks were reinstated, they really had no business being on the base. As Kinsey began to protest, Hammond quickly threw in that they had both been cleared medically and both had houses and affairs to see to. Kinsey grew quiet for a moment as he considered this.
"I want them back on base, in uniform, and ready to answer questions in 12 hours," he finally finished, hanging up the phone as soon as he heard the "Yes Senator," from George. As he sat back in his chair, Hammond wished for that bottle of scotch again.

"You're quiet," Jack remarked, dropping a kiss on her forehead. Sam sighed and stayed quiet for a moment before she answered.
"I can't shut my mind off," she finally admitted. Jack chuckled a little, this was not a new phenomenon where Carter was concerned.
"It'll be fine," he told her again. he didn't care how many times he had to repeat himself, he was going to keep telling her that until she finally believed him.
"And when my father comes after you for destroying my career?" she asked. Jack's smirk fell off his face when she said that. He remembered her story about how he had acted when she refused to take up all the strings he had pulled to get her back on the path towards NASA.
"Maybe I'll just tell him this is all your fault, that you couldn't keep your hands off of me," he said. It was Sam's turn to chuckle and inform him that there was no way Jacob was going to buy that one.
"I am his little girl," she reminded him with a smirk.
"You are a cruel, cruel woman," he informed her dramatically. "I think Teal'c is on to us," he said, moving the conversation slightly to the left.
"Not surprised," she agreed. The Jaffa was an observer, he saw EVERYTHING. "Daniel, fortunately, seems as clueless as ever." Jack nodded his agreement and began to run his fingers through Sam's hair, trying to lull them both off to sleep as a silence fell over them again. "All my violets are dead," Sam said, suddenly out of the blue.
"We'll get you new ones," he said quietly.
"And someone moved my lab around."
"We'll put it back."
"They touched all my stuff."
"Then I guess we're going to have to hunt them down and kill them. Everyone know's you don't touch Sam Carter's things." They both shared a chuckle over Jack's last answer.
"Tomorrow's going to be very busy then, what with all plant shopping and killing," she said with a yawn.
"Busy is good," he agreed as they both finally drifted off.

"If you cut it, I may stop talking to you," Jack told her quickly the next morning when he saw the look of frustration slip over her features as she pulled her hair back into a tight french braid and did something complicated with the end to make it regulation. The fact that she had pulled out the dress code manual to accomplish this wasn't lost on him.
"You grow yours out then," she grumbled as she tucked a few stray strands into place.
"You know that makes my nose look big," Jack joked with a sigh. Sam grumbled a little more under her breath before declaring herself ready to go to the SGC. Both were going to have to riffle around for new BDU's. A year of hard manual labour had toned both of them up far better than basic training ever had. The pair fell into an easy conversation as they drove towards the SGC, Sam ticking off the list of things they had to do once they got there, including getting updated security ID's and key cards.
They split up shortly after arriving on level 25, Sam heading to inspect the damage in her lab before changing while O'Neill went to find Daniel and his pot of coffee.
"Danny. . . " Jack said as he waltzed into the archeologists office. Daniel nodded, not looking up from his translation, while he hooked a finger over his shoulder to show Jack that there was coffee waiting. "What?" Jack asked when Jackson finally did look up at him.
"Rumour has it Kinsey is on his way here," he said.
"Sooner than I expected," O'Neill said casually as he sipped at his coffee. How Daniel could drink it when it was this hot was beyond him.
"Rumour also has it that he's convinced you and Sam broke regs."
"Do you have a point?" Daniel eyed his friend critically for a moment. He knew when the older man was trying to deflect a conversation.
"I'm surprised you're not more concerned."
"I've made my decisions," Jack said calmly with a shrug. Daniel's brow furrowed as he thought about what exactly that might mean. "Gotta run," Jack said quickly, before Daniel could say anything else. "Have some BDU shopping to do and a key card to replace. Thanks for the coffee!" he called as he ducked out into the hall way. Daniel stared at the empty doorway for a moment before he sat back in his chair. Teal'c was right, something had happened between them. While he was glad to see Jack so at peace with the world after so long, he couldn't get rid of the sinking feeling that something bad was coming for SG1.
